Iridex KTP
Often referred to as a green light laser. Most patients are seated in a reclined position or lying down during the Diolite 532nm KTP laser procedure. Protective eyewear will be put in place to ensure safety of the eyes in the presence of the laser light. Your provider will individualize the laser parameters/settings to customize the treatment to your condition. You will experience a warm sensation. The required time for a treatment varies from a few minutes to approximately 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.
The KTP laser is capable of sending this intense light energy directly into superficial target areas of the epidermis and dermis with minimal effect on the surrounding tissue. The laser focuses on the hemoglobin chromophore of the blood vessels or the melanin of the pigmented areas and is absorbed within them. Since there is little pain associated with the laser, no anesthetic is necessary.
Redness and swelling may occur following the KTP laser procedure. These usually resolve over a few hours to a few days. You may be advised to use cold compresses if desired and will be advised to avoid sun exposure. The KTP laser is able to treat facial vessels with less collateral tissue injury. The gentle heat destroys the endothelial cells but doesn’t burst the vessel. If bruising occurs, it will generally resolve over 7 - 10 days. Most patients are comfortable and able to return to normal activities, including work immediately after the KTP laser procedure.
Laser procedures are safe and gentle enough to be applied to most skin types and have been used safely and successfully on very young children since the 1980’s. After assessing your specific condition and goals for treatment, the physician or provider can discuss whether an Iridex Diolite 532nm laser procedure would be the most effective way to address your individual situation.
